Google Ad Grants

How to Get $10,000 a Month in Free Google Ads (And Actually Use It)

8 min read  ยท  September 2026  ยท  GoodCause Agency

Google Ad Grants is one of the most underused programmes in the nonprofit world. Eligible organisations receive up to $10,000 per month in free Google Search advertising โ€” that’s $120,000 a year โ€” and most either don’t know it exists or struggle to use more than a fraction of it.

What Google Ad Grants Actually Is

The Google Ad Grant is part of Google for Nonprofits, a programme that gives registered charities and nonprofits free access to Google tools. The grant itself provides in-kind advertising credits for Google Search โ€” the ads that appear at the top of search results when someone types a query. It covers text-based search ads only. But for intent-driven fundraising โ€” reaching people who are already searching for causes like yours โ€” it’s enormously powerful.

Who Qualifies

To be eligible, your organisation must hold current, valid charity status in your country. In the US, that means active 501(c)(3) status. In the UK, registration with the Charity Commission. Government entities, hospitals, schools, and universities are not eligible. Your website also needs to meet Google’s standards โ€” functional, with substantive content about your work, a clear privacy policy, and a donation pathway.

The Application Process

Step 1: Enrol in Google for Nonprofits at nonprofits.google.com. You’ll verify your charity status through Goodstack (formerly TechSoup). This takes 5โ€“10 business days.

Step 2: Once approved, activate Google Ad Grants from your account dashboard.

Step 3: Set up your Google Ads account with proper structure, keywords, and ad copy following the grant’s specific rules.

The Rules That Catch People Out

Google Ad Grants has ongoing compliance requirements. The key ones: minimum 5% click-through rate each month; no single-word keywords; at least 2 active ad groups per campaign with at least 2 ads each; geo-targeting must be appropriate for your cause; ads must link to your website, not a third-party platform.

How to Actually Use the $10,000

The biggest mistake nonprofits make is targeting keywords that are too broad or too competitive. The grant’s $2 maximum bid cap means you’ll rarely show for highly competitive terms. The winning strategy is specificity. Keywords like “donate to clean water project in Pakistan” or “Islamic charity for orphans UK” have lower competition, clear intent, and convert far better. Build campaigns around each cause your organisation supports, not around your organisation as a whole. Conversion tracking is also essential โ€” without it, Google’s algorithm has no signal to optimise toward.

Meta Ads

Meta Ads for Nonprofits: What Works, What Wastes Money, and How to Tell the Difference

10 min read  ยท  August 2026  ยท  GoodCause Agency

Facebook and Instagram remain the strongest paid channels for most nonprofits โ€” not because they’re cheap, but because the donor base is there. Adults aged 30โ€“60, the demographic that drives the majority of charitable giving, spend significant time on Meta platforms. The targeting tools to reach them are sophisticated, and the cost per result, when campaigns are structured correctly, is lower than almost any other paid channel.

Start With the Right Objective

Meta’s campaign objectives were built for commercial advertisers. For nonprofits, the objectives that typically perform best are Lead Generation (for building donor lists and capturing enquiries), Traffic (for driving people to donation pages), and Conversions (once you have a Meta Pixel properly installed and conversion events firing). Avoid Reach and Brand Awareness objectives for direct fundraising โ€” they optimise for impressions, not action.

Creative: The One Thing That Moves the Needle Most

In Meta advertising, creative is everything. For nonprofits, authenticity beats production value every time. A 60-second video filmed on a phone from a project site will generate more donations than a polished graphic with a stock image. Donors want to see real people, real conditions, and real impact. This is especially true for Ramadan campaigns, where donors are emotionally primed to give and respond strongly to direct, urgent, human storytelling.

Audience Targeting

For established organisations with existing donor data, Custom Audiences โ€” uploaded email lists of previous donors โ€” are the most powerful targeting option. People who have given before are dramatically more likely to give again, at a fraction of cold audience acquisition costs. Lookalike Audiences built from your donor list extend this further. For cold audiences, interest-based targeting around cause areas combined with demographic filters gives you a reasonable starting point.

The Meta Pixel: Non-Negotiable

Without a properly installed Meta Pixel, your campaigns are operating without feedback. The Pixel fires events on your website and sends that data back to Meta so the algorithm can optimise toward the actions you care about. With it correctly configured, the algorithm improves significantly over time as it learns who your donors are. Get it done before spending anything on paid campaigns.

Ramadan Fundraising

The Ramadan Fundraising Playbook: How Islamic Charities Raise the Most Money in 30 Days

12 min read  ยท  July 2026  ยท  GoodCause Agency

For Islamic charities, Ramadan is not just a fundraising campaign โ€” it’s the campaign. The one month where donor intent is highest, average gift sizes increase significantly, and people who have never given before make their first donation. Getting this right matters more than everything else you do in marketing for the rest of the year combined.

Why Ramadan Campaigns Need an 8-Week Head Start

The digital landscape during Ramadan is intensely competitive. Every Islamic charity is running ads simultaneously. CPMs on Meta rise sharply as the month approaches. Organisations that haven’t built warm audiences before Ramadan starts are paying premium prices for cold traffic. Starting 6โ€“8 weeks early lets you build Custom Audiences at lower cost, warm up your email list, test and refine creatives, and set up conversion tracking with real learning data.

The Campaign Structure That Works

Phase 1 โ€” Pre-Ramadan (8 weeks out): Content and awareness. Share project updates and beneficiary stories. No direct fundraising ask yet.

Phase 2 โ€” Pre-Ramadan (3โ€“4 weeks out): Soft launch. Begin lead-generation campaigns to build your email list at lower pre-Ramadan CPMs.

Phase 3 โ€” First 10 Nights: Full campaign launch across Meta, Google, and email. The first Ashra is your highest-volume period.

Phase 4 โ€” Middle 10 Nights: Maintain momentum. Refresh creatives to avoid ad fatigue. Run retargeting against people who visited your donation page.

Phase 5 โ€” Last 10 Nights: Your most critical window. Donations spike dramatically, particularly on the 27th night. Campaigns during Laylat ul-Qadr should be your most urgent and emotionally resonant.

What Creative Actually Converts

Beneficiary video testimonials filmed authentically outperform polished graphics consistently. Specific impact framing (“Your ยฃ20 feeds a family in Yemen for one week”) dramatically outperforms generic messaging. Countdown urgency in the final ten nights creates genuine motivation. Scholar endorsements carry enormous weight with Muslim donors.

Donor Retention

Why Most Nonprofits Lose 80% of Their Donors (And the Simple Fix That Changes Everything)

9 min read  ยท  June 2026  ยท  GoodCause Agency

The fundraising sector has a retention problem that few organisations talk about openly. The average nonprofit loses approximately 80% of first-time donors โ€” they give once, receive little meaningful follow-up, and never give again. This isn’t a donor problem. It’s a relationship problem, and it’s almost entirely within the organisation’s control to fix.

Why First-Time Donors Don’t Give Again

The most common reason is simple: no one made them feel like their gift mattered. A donor gives ยฃ50, receives an automated tax receipt, gets added to a generic mailing list, and is next contacted six months later with another ask. The second most common reason is poor follow-up timing. Research consistently shows that a donor’s likelihood of giving again drops sharply after the first 30 days following their initial gift.

The 30-Day Retention Window

The single most impactful thing most nonprofits can do for retention is build a structured 30-day follow-up sequence for every new donor. Day 1: personalised thank you email โ€” not a receipt, an actual expression of gratitude. Day 7: impact update showing what their gift is doing right now. Day 21: introduction to another area of your work. Day 30: invitation to become a monthly giver with specific, low-friction options.

Monthly Giving: The Single Most Valuable Thing You Can Offer

Monthly donors have a dramatically different retention profile. Where annual donors lapse at 80%+, monthly donors typically retain at 80โ€“90% year over year. Offering monthly giving isn’t enough โ€” it needs to be the path of least resistance. A dedicated monthly giving page, an upgrade prompt in your thank-you sequence, and a clear monthly giving ask in your Ramadan campaigns can shift a meaningful percentage of your donor base to recurring giving within 12 months.

Analytics & Tracking

GA4 and Meta Pixel Setup for Nonprofits: The Complete Tracking Guide

11 min read  ยท  May 2026  ยท  GoodCause Agency

Tracking is the part of digital marketing that most nonprofits skip over โ€” it’s technical, not visible in the way creative is, and its value only becomes obvious once it’s working. Once it is working, every decision you make about where to spend your fundraising budget gets dramatically better.

What You’re Trying to Measure

Before touching any tools, be clear on what conversion means for your organisation. For most nonprofits: completed donations, newsletter sign-ups, volunteer applications, and event registrations. Everything you set up should be oriented around these specific outcomes โ€” not just traffic or page views.

Google Analytics 4

GA4 is built around events rather than sessions. Every action a visitor takes โ€” clicking a button, completing a form โ€” can be tracked as an event and used to build conversion funnels. Setting up GA4 requires creating a property at analytics.google.com, installing the GA4 tag through Google Tag Manager, and configuring the specific events that matter. The funnel report in GA4 Explore is particularly valuable โ€” it shows exactly where people drop off in your donation process, from viewing the page to completing the gift.

Meta Pixel

The Meta Pixel connects your website to your Meta Ads account. Without it, Meta’s algorithm has no way to learn who your donors are and can’t optimise campaigns toward people likely to donate. With the Pixel firing correctly and conversion events configured, the algorithm learns from every donation and improves performance over time. This improvement compounds โ€” campaigns with proper Pixel data for three to six months significantly outperform the same campaigns at launch.

Setting Up Conversion Events

Both GA4 and Meta Pixel need specific events for the conversions you care about. The most important: a Donate event that fires when a donation is completed, with the donation value passed as a parameter. This enables ROAS reporting โ€” you can see exactly how much donation value your paid campaigns are generating per pound of ad spend. If your donation platform is a third-party tool, this requires Conversions API or redirect thank-you pages that fire your events.

Nonprofit Marketing

Why Most Nonprofit Marketing Fails โ€” And the Three Things That Actually Work

7 min read  ยท  April 2026  ยท  GoodCause Agency

Most nonprofits that struggle with marketing aren’t making unusual mistakes. They’re making the same three mistakes that organisations like theirs have been making for years. Identifying them clearly is the first step to building something that actually works.

Mistake 1: Marketing Without Measurement

The most pervasive problem in nonprofit marketing is the absence of meaningful measurement. Organisations run campaigns without any clear way of knowing whether those campaigns are working. Success is defined loosely as “we raised money this month,” with no ability to attribute what came from where or why. Without measurement, there’s no learning. The same campaigns get repeated, the same approaches get funded, and the same results continue. GA4, a properly configured Meta Pixel, and a simple monthly review process covering which channels drove donations at what cost will give most nonprofits more actionable insight than they’ve ever had.

Mistake 2: Focusing on Acquisition and Ignoring Retention

Acquiring a new donor is expensive. It requires reaching someone who doesn’t know your organisation, earning their trust, and persuading them to take a financial action for the first time. When that person gives once and disappears because no one followed up meaningfully, the full cost of acquisition is wasted. Most nonprofit marketing budgets are heavily weighted toward acquisition with minimal investment in keeping donors already in the database. Shifting even 10โ€“15% of a marketing budget from acquisition to retention โ€” a proper 30-day welcome sequence, segmented communications, a monthly giving pathway โ€” typically produces significantly better total returns.

Mistake 3: Generic Messaging

Scan the fundraising communications of ten nonprofits working in the same space and most say roughly the same things: “your donation changes lives,” “every pound counts,” “help us make a difference.” These phrases have stopped meaning anything. The organisations that consistently raise more have specific, concrete impact messaging. Not “help vulnerable families” but “your ยฃ30 provides a family in Idlib with clean water for one month.” Specificity is credible. Specificity builds trust. And in a sector where donors are rightly sceptical about where their money goes, the most specific organisation wins.

How Islamic Charities Can Use Digital Marketing Without Compromising Their Values

8 min read  ยท  March 2026  ยท  GoodCause Agency

Digital marketing for Islamic charities sits at an important intersection. The tools available โ€” paid social, search advertising, email โ€” are powerful and demonstrably effective at raising the funds that enable charitable work. But applying them thoughtlessly to a charitable context creates problems. The question isn’t whether Islamic charities should use digital marketing. They should, and increasingly they must, to reach younger Muslim donors who discover causes through their phones. The question is how to use these tools transparently, accountably, and consistently with Islamic principles.

Transparency as a Marketing Asset

Muslim donors are among the most rigorous in the world when it comes to accountability. Questions about administrative overhead, fund allocation, and on-the-ground impact are common and appropriate. Organisations that answer these proactively โ€” with specifics and evidence โ€” don’t just build trust. They differentiate themselves in a crowded space. Making transparency a feature of your digital marketing: annual impact reports shared widely, real-time project updates, breakdown of how funds are spent. Donors who feel fully informed give more, give more frequently, and refer others.

Zakat-Specific Marketing

Zakat is obligatory for eligible Muslims and calculated precisely according to Islamic jurisprudence. Organisations that are Zakat-eligible and make that clear โ€” with straightforward information about their compliance and fund distribution โ€” have a significant advantage in the digital space. Search campaigns targeting “pay Zakat online,” “Zakat calculator,” and “Zakat-eligible charities” capture donors actively looking to fulfil an obligation. This intent-driven traffic converts at significantly higher rates than general charity awareness campaigns.

The Google Ad Grant as Halal Marketing Tool

The Google Ad Grant deserves specific mention in the Islamic charity context. As an in-kind grant โ€” a gift of advertising credit rather than a financial loan โ€” it raises no issues of Riba. For Islamic organisations cautious about certain commercial arrangements, the Ad Grant is a straightforwardly permissible tool that can drive significant donation volume at zero media cost.

Landing Pages

What a High-Converting Nonprofit Donation Page Actually Looks Like

9 min read  ยท  February 2026  ยท  GoodCause Agency

The donation page is the most important page on a nonprofit’s website, and it’s almost always the least optimised. Organisations spend thousands on paid advertising to drive traffic to a page that loses 70โ€“80% of visitors without a donation. The gap between a mediocre and a well-optimised donation page is often the difference between a campaign that breaks even and one that generates 3โ€“4x return on ad spend.

Message Match: The First Thing People See Has to Match What They Clicked

When someone clicks an ad about providing clean water to families in Pakistan and arrives on a generic donation page for your organisation’s overall work, there’s a disconnect. That disconnect causes bounces. The headline, imagery, and first paragraph of your donation page should directly reflect the specific appeal they responded to. Message-matched landing pages typically convert at significantly higher rates than generic donation pages.

The Headline Carries Most of the Weight

On a donation page, the headline needs to do three things immediately: confirm they’re in the right place, state the specific impact of a donation, and create a reason to act now. “Your donation today feeds a family in Yemen for a week” does all three. “Support our cause” does none of them. Specificity and immediacy are the two most important qualities in donation page headline copy.

The Donation Form: Fewer Fields, More Money

Every field you add to a donation form is a potential reason for someone to abandon it. The minimum viable donation form is: name, email, payment details, donation amount. Pre-set donation amounts with clear impact labels consistently outperform open-amount fields and often increase average gift size. Mobile optimisation is non-negotiable โ€” the majority of donation page traffic now comes from phones, particularly during Ramadan campaigns. Test your donation page on your phone before any campaign goes live.

How to Build a Year-Round Fundraising Calendar That Actually Gets Used

10 min read  ยท  January 2026  ยท  GoodCause Agency

The fundraising calendar problem is common across nonprofits of all sizes. The organisation works flat out during Ramadan, raises significant funds, then goes quiet for months. Donors who gave during Ramadan hear nothing until the next major campaign. By the time they’re contacted again, the emotional connection has faded. A well-designed year-round fundraising calendar doesn’t just fill the gaps โ€” it builds compounding momentum. Donors kept warm between campaigns give more when major campaigns arrive.

The Major Moments to Plan Around

Ramadan (month-long): The single most important window. Planning should begin 8 weeks before, with budget, creative, and email sequences finalised before the first of Ramadan.

Eid al-Fitr (Zakat al-Fitr): The period immediately before Eid is a high-intent giving moment, particularly for Fitrana. Run this as a distinct campaign from the broader Ramadan effort.

Dhul Hijjah and Qurbani: The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are among the most blessed in the Islamic calendar. Qurbani campaigns and general good deeds fundraising can generate significant volume for organisations that engage their donors effectively.

Year-end giving (November-December): Tax incentives in the US and UK drive year-end giving across the charitable sector. A well-timed December campaign tied to a specific project can be a strong revenue driver.

Filling the Gaps Between Campaigns

Between major campaigns, the goal isn’t fundraising โ€” it’s relationship maintenance. Monthly impact updates, project milestones, and donor anniversary emails keep your base warm. Donors who hear from you meaningfully 10โ€“12 times a year give significantly more than donors contacted twice a year with fundraising appeals.

Agency Selection

How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency for Your Nonprofit (Without Getting Burned)

6 min read  ยท  December 2025  ยท  GoodCause Agency

Hiring a digital marketing agency is one of the most consequential decisions a nonprofit makes. A good agency relationship can dramatically increase donation volume, improve donor retention, and build the marketing infrastructure the organisation needs to grow. A poor one wastes budget, generates reports full of activity metrics that don’t translate to donations, and leaves the organisation worse off than before.

The Most Important Question: Do They Understand the Sector?

Nonprofit marketing is different from commercial marketing in ways that matter significantly for campaign performance. Donor psychology differs from consumer psychology. Compliance obligations differ. The metrics that matter differ. An agency that builds excellent e-commerce campaigns isn’t necessarily equipped to run a Ramadan fundraising campaign or manage a Google Ad Grants account. Ask specifically: have they worked with organisations in your cause area? Can they share relevant case studies with actual donation numbers?

What to Ask About Reporting

Before signing anything, get clarity on what success looks like and how it will be measured. Ask to see a sample report. If the report is full of impressions and engagement rates without donation data, that’s a signal. A competent agency will report clearly on cost per donation and ROAS. Ask specifically: how do they track donations from paid campaigns? What tools do they use?

Beware of Lock-In and Opacity

Two red flags: locking the client out of their own advertising accounts, and bundling ad spend and management fees opaquely. Always insist on owning your own ad accounts, website tracking, and data. These belong to your organisation. The best agency relationships often start with a defined, limited scope โ€” a single Ramadan campaign, a Google Ad Grants setup โ€” that lets both sides demonstrate capability before committing to an ongoing engagement.
